Kansas is nowadays best known for the play of a sensational quarterback and a powerful pop culture couple. Before the arrival of the Chiefs dynasty, Kansas was still considered a fly-over state, most notably as the home Dorothy and Toto wished to return to.
Heathens, written and directed by Nathaniel Paull, adds even more eccentric characters to further enrich Kansas lore. The mockumentary follows a coven of six witches in Johnson County, Kansas, and their occult deeds and desires.
Each witch in the coven specializes in a different form of witchcraft, such as fire magic, tarot card readings, and sex magic. Conjuring all these witches together leads to comedic curses and contemptuous, vulgar infighting within the Kansas coven.
If you’re a fan of mockumentary classics like Spinal Tap, What We Do in the Shadows, or Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, you will most definitely enjoy Heathens. Heathens skillfully uses the mockumentary style to help keep the jokes and story fresh. As the film premieres at upcoming festivals, there will now be six new witches synonymous with the farm lands of Kansas.
